When he returned to Rio de Janeiro in 1912, Villa-Lobos briefly attempted to receive a more formalized education, but his personality and musical practice proved ill-matched with the academic establishment and, although he made important connections with the faculty, he soon Villa-Lobos was one of the most original composers of the 20th Century. Heitor Villa-Lobos was mainly a musical autodidact. In around 1915, he began to use folkloric elements in his music. He spent the 1920s in Paris. There, he got in contact with the avant garde, and befriended Darius Milhaud, who encouraged and supported him.
